The ReCYCLEry

If you don't know what a bike recyclery is, it's basically a charity organization that people donate bikes to and the recyclery will salvage the parts, sell the bike for cheap, or help people build new bikes or fix their current bikes with the parts that they salvage.  They are also good for anyone who wants to learn about bikes because there is usually a lot of bike maintenance to be done and you'll get to work with a lot of different tools so you become more familiar with your own bike.  Some, and I think the one in Asheville does this, have a system where you come in and volunteer and you keep doing more and more hours and eventually you "earn" a bike.  This basically means you've volunteered enough that they think you deserve a bike if you want one, and usually involves your working on it a little bit while you volunteer.  They get no government funding and are completely reliant on community donations, so if you can't donate, volunteer, if you can't volunteer, donate, whatever works.

  1. The idea of a bike recyclery is pretty cool, Jacob. I like the fact that you can earn a bike of your own just through volunteering. However, the ultimate goal is to give back to the community and through this organization I'm sure many people within our community will be thankful for your service.

  2. Kick ass, crazy idea man. I hope it works out. Try to get a cool one, like, with flames or something. Or a Bigwheel. Bigwheel's are dope. Anyways, good luck and good biking!

  3. That's awesome! I love working with bikes: my friends in Maryland had a bike shop that worked like this. Annapolis is a lot like Asheville too. Do you already have a bike here? It's so convienient. They must get a lot of donations to stay up and running (or cycling)!
